In my teens and early twenties, I owned a total of four RX-7s; two first gens and two second gens. I found a local, manual Z31 Turbo for sale one day and decided to check it out. It drove like a pig. It didn't feel light on its feet. It was not a responsive car, nor did it offer very good feel when accelerating, cornering, and braking. Furthermore, it wasn't very quick for what it was... keep in mind, this was a very well maintained specimen in great overall shape, and they were asking a pretty penny for it. Needless to say, I decided against it. I ended up going on to build an S13 240SX fastback, which was a much better platform overall. After that car, I left Nissan and never went back.

The Z31 has a terrible trailing arm rear suspension that makes it difficult to hold a controlled slide and the turbo is not intercooled, has a very rudimentary EFI and is a 2 valve SOHC single turbo setup. The exhaust manifolds will severely limit the power that you will be able to make. I had one and the are very torquie and alot of fun. I was able to get about 300hp on race gas, bigger injectors, Jim Wolf ECU, 3" exhaust, intercooler kit back in the early 2000s. I blew a few motors racing corvettes, and M5s on the highway.

Never heard of a bad head gasket on a 7M... Curious where you got your info. A bad oil system is what kills the turbos and destroys those engines. However I was shocked my 7MGE survived a whopping 5 minutes of torture with zero oil until it seized.

The real forgotten Z car is the 280zx lol but to be fair, both the 280zx and the z31 300zx are the ugly ducklings of Z cars 😅 that being said, my first car was an 81 280zx 2+2 that my parents helped me put a 350sbc into lmao the car was a heaping pile of shit but I loved it straight into the ground. The guy I sold it to years ago still has it, had it completely restomodded into a show quality weekend/ drag strip car. Get em while they’re still cheap ish!

If you want a six cylinder you go with a z31 if you want to 4 cylinder with the same body style you go with the Isuzu impulse/Piazza.

@ThreepieceUS First off - Manufacturers should not be allowed to sell vehicles that do not fit within the guidelines or the laws of specific states. If the Ford Mustang GT350 does not meet the legal requirements in California it should not be allowed to be sold by a Ford dealership in California, nor should the state allow the vehicle to be registered for license plates, period. Second - As a resident of the state of California you should be well apprised of the laws BEFORE you purchase a vehicle AND should not purchased a vehicle that is not compliant with state laws. You may not agree with the laws and you also do not have to follow them but there is a price if you choose to break the law! The issue has of an extremely simple resolution.... Follow the rules and don't get hassled or don't follow the rules and pay the price. Whichever you choose please quit complaining to the world about the repercussions of your choice! This one solely on you bud!

I don't think they're underrated at all, people just know they're a nightmare to maintain and you might as well just let them rot if a rust, electrical or powertrain/frame rebuild is in the question.

Uhhh manual turbo for $7k. What kind of crack are you all smoking. In 2016 i bought a manual NA 2+2 1985 one for $5,500k with insane mileage. Autos were going for $4k all day. Turbo manuals were going for $12k. Ive been keeping an eye out for one for almost a decade. Cheapest ive seen turbo 2 seater manual in that time has been around $18k. Cheapesr turbo in 500 miles of chicago is $25k. 100% of facebook turbo ones are rusted subframe blown engines for anything near $7k

My old full motordyne 350z hr caused some turmoil with my wife, more than a few times. I finally sold it for something better performing, but I do miss that car. When it was catless, I’ll admit that it was too loud. Best shifting car I ever had. I miss the heel-toe dance and the seats were sublime.

Cheap wheels for me! I don't like low pro tires on a daily driver. Gravity casting will do the job. If I had money for a weekend sports car with low pros, flow formed all the way.
